Third International Conference on Mechanics of Biomaterials & Tissues
December 13-17, 2009
Clearwater Beach, Florida, USA
The aim of the Third International Conference on Mechanics of Biomaterials is to provide a forum for the discussion of the modeling and measurement of deformation and fracture behavior in biological materials and in those materials which are used to replace them in the human body. A particular theme of the conference will be how lessons learnt in the study of engineering materials can be made relevant to the study of biomaterials.
The mechanical behavior of human-body materials is a subject of great scientific interest, the understanding of which is of vital importance in many branches of medicine, from sports science to the design of medical devices. Materials such as bone, cartilage and muscle have some intriguing and unique characteristics, but nevertheless their behavior can usefully be studied using techniques developed for other load-bearing, structural materials. For example, fracture mechanics can be applied to study the growth of cracks in bone: soil mechanics modeling informs the study of biphasic soft tissue materials. Studies in biomechanics range from macroscopic to microscopic, recently including work at the nano- and cellular level such as the mechanics of individual cells and molecules such as DNA.
Topics of interest will include:
- Artificial biomaterials (for implants, prostheses etc)
- Biomimetics
- Deformation under load
- Experimental techniques
- Failure criteria
- Fracture, fatigue and creep
- Hard tissues (bone, tooth materials)
- Mechanics of cells, molecules and nanomaterials
- Mechanics of living tissue (including repair and adaptation)
- Molecular mechanics
- Soft tissues (cartilage, muscle, tendon, skin, etc)
- Stress/strain/time relationships
- Structural properties of natural materials
- Theoretical models
- Tissue engineering materials
- Wear, friction and lubrication
Language
The official language of the conference will be English.
